The Institute for Social and Development Studies (Institut für Gesellschaftspolitik) is an apostolic work of the Society of Jesus dedicated to the mission for justice understood as integral to the service of faith. The Institute draws from the Societys tradition of engaging in social sciences and is closely connected to the Heinrich-Pesch-Haus in Mannheim.

The German Province of the Society of Jesus (Deutsche Provinz der Jesuiten) in Munich is the sponsor of the Institute for Social and Development Studies. The Institute has been affiliated since 1971 as an independent body with the Munich School of Philosophy (Hochschule für Philosophie München).

The Institute is a member organisation of EUROJESS (European Jesuits in Social Sciences) and of the Working Group Social Justice (Social Apostolate SJ) of the Central European Assistancy of the Society of Jesus. It collaborates closely with the present Heinrich-Pesch-Haus in Ludwigshafen, Caritas-Pirckheimer-Haus in Nuremberg, the Mission Procure of the German Jesuits in Nürnberg, and the Jesuit Refugee Service. There is a regular exchange with the Oswald von Nell-Breuning-Institute for Economic and Societal Ethics in Frankfurt and the Catholic Social Academy of Austria in Vienna.
