Integrated Studies in the Basic Principles of the Social Sciences at the Munich School of Philosophy

The Ethics of Globalization

Aim

Modern societies have grown ever more complex and enigmatic, due in large part to the international interweaving of economic, social, cultural and political interests.  This is what most refer to with the concept of globalization, and also implies how important and difficult it is to make a competent and systematic analysis of societal problems and interconnectivity.  Coupled with such analyses are unavoidable normative questions, which necessitate the acquisition of a basic understanding of the phenomenon of globalization.  Such insight will allow us to ethically reflect and form value-based judgments, which others can appreciate, concerning our globalized setting.

Conclusion and Cost

In order to support and develop a competency in this critical field, the Munich School of Philosophy offers an integrated studies program in “The Ethics of Globalization: Basic Principles of the Social Sciences”.  We offer this two, at most three, semester study as an extension to a previously completed first studies program.  This is an opportunity for advanced training in social philosophy and the social sciences, with a particular emphasis on the international context of the modern world.  Courses are planned according to a credit system (corresponding to the European Credit System – ECTS) that also allows the program to be completed on a part-time basis.  One can begin in summer or winter semesters.  To ensure the quality and up-to-dateness of this advanced training, there is a semester fee of €300 (with an additional administrative fee of €50, €20 for those who are simultaneously registered for studies at another university).

Content of Studies

The course of studies consists of three equally weighted emphases:

  • Basic principles of social philosophy – Courses in the areas of meta-ethics and social ethics; social philosophy (political philosophy and philosophy of law); areas related to social ethics: business ethics, environmental ethics, peace studies, and the ethics of development policy.

  • International collaboration and developmental policy – Courses in the following subjects: International relations, globalization, global governance, international political economy, international environmental politics, migration, and developmental policy.

The courses are held in German, however work can be completed in English as well as the option of other languages by agreement with the professor.
